2014 in Film: Grand Budapest Hotel

Ahoy! Spoilers Ahead:

If there really is a such a thing as the Manic Pixie Dream Girl (or MPDG for those who simply can't abide saying full words) I can pretty much guarantee you that Wes Anderson will have at least one film in her Top 10.  He's an auteur of the first degree, creating stylized portraits of family life in his films, and, more often than not, just creating stylized portraits frame by frame.  If you can't tell, I'm a fan.  I'm a fan of his dialogue, his color palette choices, his soundtracks and jealous beyond belief of his production designers and costumers/stylists.  Over the course of 8 films, including his most recent release, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes Anderson has intricately crafted his own universe, filled with quirky personalities and settings that are saturated with both color and emotion.  This may sound like an odd statement to make, considering many of the characters deliver lines with such deadpan precision as to belie any investment…

(Zombie) Apocalypse Now

Guys, I'm fired up.  I was going to go to bed early. I was going to write a review of the Veronica Mars movie, which I saw yesterday. I was going to read a chapter in that John Le Carre novel that I'm bound and determined to finish within the week.  And then, I watched The Walking Dead.  Now, I'm not certain if it was the extremely melodramatic fashion in which the story unfolded this evening (let's be honest, it's been more melo than dramatic for a while now) or whether it was the high sugar intake I had because I ate a small Reese's Peanut Butter Cup blizzard a little under two hours ago, but now, I had to write this post just to ask:

"Hey Walking Dead, what the heck is going on with you?"

Now part of that is as a result of the inevitable comparison I've rendered against you to True Detective.  Fairly or unfairly, last week, in your time slot, but on HBO, I was watching one of the most satisfying conclusions to a television series I've seen…

2013/2014 Post-Award Season Round-Up

Well, the Oscars have officially come and gone, signaling the end of one movie year and the beginning of the next. I finally feel like it's the appropriate time to share my list of the movies that you should have seen/ may have to now wait a bit to see/ might have seen but were dying to know what I thought about said film before you settled on an opinion.  Sure this post is a bit delayed, but really, the holidays are crazy and by January, only about half of the films that have been anticipated for the awards season have been released nation-wide.  Being stuck in the suburban boonies, it felt like I waited an eternity before seeing HER (who? shout out to Chris Gallo!) in a theater.  However, those little gold statuettes have gone home with some, while others (here's looking at you LEO) will have to wait at least another year...or maybe another 20 or maybe they'll have to wait until the Academy gives them their gilded version of a rich people pity party, by granting them th…
